Welcome Needle Exchange |

Needle exchange was first introduced in England in 1985 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. It is a facility where injecting drug users can obtain free sterile injecting equipment (works) without too many awkward questions being asked. Users are encouraged to return their used injecting equipment within their personal 'sharps' containers for safe disposal, to ensure that they aren't going to cause a problem in the community and lead to someone being injured and/or infected. Welcome operates a needle Exchange from its centre offering a large range of equipment for many different types of drug use and advice on safer injecting techniques and harm reduction. Welcome needle exchange can also offer free condoms on request. As well as operating a needle exchange (Nx) from the Welcome Centre there are a number of pharmacies participating in our Nx scheme. In this way our clients can obtain free, sterile equipment and also dispose of used ‘sharps’ in a responsible, hygienic and safe manner. The pharmacies involved in the scheme are:
We also run an Nx for users of Performance Enhancing Drugs (PED’s) wherein clients can ’pick ‘n’ mix equipment to suit their individual needs. Free condoms are also available at the Welcome Centre. Found a Needle or a Syringe? What are the hazards?
If you find a needle or a syringe: DO NOT TOUCH IT.
If you receive a needlestick injury:
