Benefits Of Family Support

Entry Criteria

Anyone affected by another person’s substance misuse.

Mutual self help groups are based on the premise that sharing with others who have similar problems can be emotionally healing.  Also people who have experienced similar problems can be among the best sources for referrals and moral support.

Welcome recognises the impact substance misuse has on families and friends of users.  The family support group is intended to alleviate and absorb some of this impact.

Members of the group will share experiences and common concerns and work towards increasing their understanding of how the drug problem affects them.  Group members will also have the opportunity to avail themselves of the range of services that Welcome offers.

Some people who have participated in support and bereavement groups say the experience gave them an emotional connection when they felt isolated from friends and family. A group can provide and share information ranging from disease research and new medications to how a bereaved person can cope during the first year after a loved one's death.
